The great and the good of the fashion industry ventured North to Tottenham to watch one of the top catwalk shows on the London Men’s Collections calendar. The event is the menswear equivalent of London Fashion Week and finishes today.

Martine Rose, whose label has been based in Tottenham for a decade, decided to host her catwalk show in Seven Sisters Market. The indoor stalls were open for business, providing the legions of fashion buyers, journalists and bloggers with a taster of their delicious creations while they waited for the show to start.

The company said in a statement: “Martine Rose has been based in Tottenham for the last 10 years, making it increasingly relevant to hold an event in the area in which the label has developed and flourished. The incredible indoor Seven Sisters Market and its community deserve to be celebrated and experienced. By holding the show in this unique market space, Martine is hoping to not only raise awareness on a diverse and exciting part of London but also to support both the businesses and the people who make the market what it is.”

Martine Rose is sold in shops all over the world including in Selfridges, Browns and Matches Fashion in the UK and yesterday’s show was well received by those in the know. Instagram was abuzz with photos from the show and Damien Paul, head of menswear at Matchesfashion.com, told fashion trade magazine Drapers:

“…there was a real buzz before the show. Who knew a highlight on the schedule would take place in a market in Seven Sisters? I loved the Human League hair, interesting cutaway backless mac and jackets and the vibrant use of colour. A great show and a brilliant way to end the day.”

The show will no doubt provide a boost to the Seven Sisters Market, which is facing an uncertain future as the council seeks a way to balance redevelopment of the area with preservation of local businesses and the local community. Read more about a new film documenting the issue here
