Two bank holidays in one month always seems too good to be true. Sure, you could celebrate by taking long lie-ins and relaxing in the sun*, but if you’re looking for something different to do this weekend, we’ve got a few suggestions for you…

*DISCLAIMER: SeventhSister cannot guarantee the presence of sunny weather this weekend. We’ll do a little Sun Dance but, y’know, might be worth packing a brolly?

1.Save the environment…with your stomach

A feast of local food, drink and entertainment awaits at this year’s RiverFest.

Whether you’re an environmental warrior wanting to learn more about how to save our rivers, a local looking to support our fabulous neighbourhood businesses, or simply a gourmand who wants to gorge on a feast of crayfish (that oh-so-tasty environmental pest), fun, education and joy a-plenty awaits.

Tottenham Ploughman RiverFest. Sunday 29 May 11:00-18:00 *FREE* Lordship Hub, Lordship Rec, N17 6NU. For more info visit Tottenham Ploughman’s website Crayfish Bob’s crayfish boil at the RiverFest. Sunday 29 May at 13:00. Book a crayfish boil before 4pm on Saturday 28 May

2.What the window cleaner saw

Towards the end of World War II, local artist Ben Robson began sketching Tottenham during his working day as a window cleaner.

His pursuit lasted for several decades, capturing scenes of everyday life as the borough evolved around him.

‘A Clear View – drawings of Tottenham’ showcases Robson’s lively, documentary-style illustrations and provides a link with Tottenham’s past. This is the first time Robson’s work has been shown at Bruce Castle Museum.

A Clear View – drawings of Tottenham by Ben Robson is at Bruce Castle. Wednesday 25 May – Sunday 29 May 13:00-17:00 *FREE* Coleraine Gallery, 1st floor, Bruce Castle Museum, Lordship Lane, N17 6RT For more info visit the Bruce Castle website

3.Clone your garden green

There’s nothing artificial about these clones. This one-day course is aimed at both newbie and seasoned gardeners, and shows you how to create new plants from your existing ones.

Gardening tutor Jo Homan, who specialises in forest gardening, explains the ins and outs of plant propagation and demonstrates a range of techniques. This includes a field trip to Finsbury Park where you can get your green fingers dirty with some practical experience.

Plantastic Cloning. Saturday 28 May 09:30-16:00 Edible Landscapes London, Finsbury Park, N4 2NQ For more info visit the Edible Landscapes website

4.Eat, drink and be very merry

Dine like a king and drink like a lord at The People’s Palace this weekend. The Street Food and Craft Beer Festival fills the 196-acre park with a mouth-watering variety of street food, and drinks from cutting-edge craft beer breweries including Tottenham locals Beavertown.

You can also dance the night away to music from live bands and DJs, while gazing down at Alexandra Palace’s spectacular views of London.

5.Explore a hidden gem

Railway Fields, one of three nature reserves in the borough, opened in the 1980s and was declared a Local Nature Reserve in 1990.

This former railway goods and coal yard, located opposite Harringay Green Lanes overground station, is an oasis of cool and calm just beyond the lively scenes of Green Lanes. Home to numerous varieties of butterflies, birds and wild flowers, it’s definitely worth a look.

Slightly erratic opening hours mean locals often miss catching it on the right day. We’ve checked and they will be open this weekend, so make the most of the opportunity.

Railway Fields Nature Reserve. Saturday 28 May 09:00-17:00 – Sunday 29 May 11:00-14:00 (weather dependent) *FREE* 381 Green Lanes, N4 1ES For more info visit the Railway Fields website

6.Get inked

There’s certainly no lack of variety in what Alexandra Palace puts on these days.

Whether you are a tattoo aficionado, a novice or just like the look of the things but faint at the reality of the needles, the Great British Tattoo Show has something for you.

With plenty of live entertainment, more than 300 tattoo artists and spectacular fashion shows, this is the tattoo event of the year.

Note that the outrageously extreme burlesque group The Dolls are performing, so perhaps this is not one for the kids.

7.Unleash your child’s inner Bear Grylls

Orienteering might sound terribly grown up, but learning how to navigate and read maps are fantastic skills for kids to develop.

This Xplorer session at Lordship Hub will challenge children both physically and mentally, while giving them the opportunity to romp around the lovely Lordship Recreation Ground and learn more about the area they live in.

8.Dance ’til you drop

This Sunday marks the end of the month-long food and music residency Reggae Roast at one of Haringey’s most exciting new event spaces – Styx.

Enjoy the finest sounds from the reggae music scene, rum cocktails in abundance and a feast of Caribbean barbecue from Mama’s Jerk Station. Expect this one to go out with a bang.

9.Mourn the end of the football season

Bernie Grant Arts Centre is helping to make up for a lack of games this Saturday with a screening of award-winning comedy film Kicking Off.

This is followed by a Q&A with the film’s director Matt Wilde and producer Andrew Thompson.

Expect high tension when, in the dying minutes of the final game of the season, the referee disallows a goal that would save the club from relegation. The losing fans subsequently go on a rioting rampage that leads to two of them kidnapping the ref.

10.All the fun of the fair

Whether you are a real daredevil or too timid to even ride the carousel, there’s no denying the electrifying atmosphere of a funfair in full swing.

The Finsbury Park Funfair is open throughout half-term week. Take plenty of cash for the rides, as queues at nearby cash machines can reach epic proportions. And don’t forget to save a little something for a stick of candyfloss.
